Business
Soham has it's very own
Association of Commerce & Trade, otherwise known as SACT, who are pro-active
in getting the local community to shop in the town as well as providing the
funding for the annual Christmas Lights. SACT enables local businesses to get
to together and exchange ideas to help improve the local economy. Research has
shown that there are around 400 Businesses based in and around Soham from
smaller family based firms to the larger more well known enterprises such as
Turners Transport (Soham) Limited, G's Marketing, Shropshires and Scampers.
One success story has been the
introduction of the Shop Watch Scheme along with
the
installation of
seven CCTV security cameras in the town. They are all linked to a control centre
in Cambridge and monitor the streets they cover 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,
265 day a year. There has already been a drastic reduction in vandalism to
shop windows since the cameras went live in November 2002 and people generally
feel a lot safer when visiting the town centre.
Another more recent success has
been upgrading of the Soham Telephone Exchange to allow ADSL Fast Broadband Internet Access. This would
not have been possible without the hard work over the past year by Soham
On-Line Community Website and the Broadband 4 Soham Campaign with the full
support and backing of East Cambridgeshire District Council (ECDC), Soham Town
Forum (STF), Soham Town Council (STC), Soham Village College (SVC), Soham
Business Training Centre and Soham Association of Commerce and Trade (SACT).

The local Village College
houses Soham Business Training Centre (SBTC) which acts as a
focal point for the local business community by providing high quality training in ICT
including Microsoft Office Applications,
Management Training, First Aid, Health & Safety, Modern Foreign Languages, Legislative Changes
and Business Start-up Help.
Training can be provided at the newly refurbished centre or accessed
online from home or from the workplace. Conferencing facilities and
equipment are also available to hire including an fully equipped ICT Computer Suite,
Video Conferencing, Data Projector/Overhead Projector, Laptops and Catering.
Soham Business Training Centre has been set up in partnership with
Cambridgeshire Business Training Centres, CambsTEC, Cambridgeshire Business Link, East Cambridgeshire District Council,
Cambridgeshire County Council, Greater Cambridge Partnership, Cambridge Skills
Development, CamLearn - Cambridgeshire Community Grid for Learning, Cambridge
Enterprise Agency and
have access to quality, kite-marked training providers and Personal Business
Advisors in order to provide a custom-made service.
