The new Soham Millennium Walks & Arts
Trail Leaflet can be obtained from Soham Town Council & Soham
Library |
A £16,000 art project has been
installed which forms part of Soham's Millennium Walks.
Eight signpost sculptures depicting local themes have been
placed along the three millennium walk routes, which were
created by Soham Town Council in conjunction with Soham
Footpaths Society to commemorate the start of the third
millennium AD. Artist Jon Mills, who was commissioned to
complete the project, unveiled one of the sculptures, which
is situated at the entrance to Fountain Lane car park on
Tuesday 24th May 2005. Members from Soham organisations and
groups were at the opening along with youngsters from Soham
Village College Citizenship Group, who had taken part in
metal workshops with Mr Mills as part of the project.
Examples of the children's work are displayed in a new
leaflet about the walks, which is available from The
Pavilion, Recreation Ground, Fountain Lane. The routes vary
in length from one-and-three-quarter miles to seven miles
and take in points of interest such as the site of the 1944
explosion that destroyed Soham Station and Qua Fen and East
Fen commons. People will now be able to collect mementoes of
the walks on route because each sculpture has a brass plaque
from which a brass rubbing can be taken. Soham Town Council,
Soham Town Forum, Soham Museum Project, Soham Footpaths
Society, assisted by Commissions East and Arts Development
in East Cambridgeshire (ADEC) had a key role in developing
the project, which was financed by East Cambridgeshire
District Council and the Greater Cambridge Partnership with
funding from the East of England Development Agency as part
of its Soham Revival Scheme. The revival scheme aims to
improve the town centre and provides a complimentary
programme of activities to the town forum.
